Reasons for Nullifying the Fast (According to Sahih Evidence)
Fasting or Sawm is an act of worship, which is observed from dawn (Fajr) to sunset by abstaining from certain actions for the pleasure of Allah. Doing certain specific actions breaks the fast. These are proven by the Qur'an and Sahih Hadith.
Allah Ta'ala says
“And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread, then complete the fast until the night.”
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:187
It is understood from this verse that abstaining from eating and drinking from Fajr to sunset is obligatory (Fardh), and doing these breaks the fast.
Reasons for Nullifying the Fast According to Sahih Hadith
1. Intentional Eating and Drinking
If anyone intentionally eats or drinks anything while fasting, the fast is broken.
2. Intentional Sexual Intercourse
Establishing marital relations while fasting breaks the fast and requires a strict expiation (Kaffarah).
3. Intentional Vomiting
It has come in the Hadith that whoever vomits intentionally, their fast is broken.
4. Onset of Menstruation (Hayd) and Postnatal Bleeding (Nifas)
In the case of women, if menstruation or postnatal bleeding begins, the fast is broken.
5. Intentionally Entering any Fast-Breaking Substance into the Body
Such as injections or nutritional saline that acts as an alternative to food.
Remember briefly
The fast is broken if:
- Eating or drinking is done intentionally
- Sexual intercourse is committed
- Intentional vomiting is done
- Menstruation (Hayd) or postnatal bleeding (Nifas) begins
- Something resembling food is entered into the body
Fasting is a sacred act of worship, so it is very important to be aware of all the reasons that break it.
