Fasting (Sawm) is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Islam is built upon five fundamental foundations, and fasting is one of its core pillars. Sawm /Fasting is an act of worship in Islam, where a Muslim abstains from food, drink, and acts that invalidate the fast for a specified period, solely for the pleasure of Allah.
Generally speaking, Sawm means:
- Abstaining from eating from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib).
- Abstaining from drinking.
- And controlling one's desires (Nafs).
In the Holy Qur'an, Allah Ta'ala says:
“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous (attain Taqwa).”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183
Remember briefly
Sawm is an act of worship for self-purification, which fosters patience, self-restraint, and the fear of Allah (Taqwa) within a person.
