The Five Pillars of Islam

The Five Pillars of Islam are the fundamental foundations upon which the entire Islamic way of life is established.

The word "pillar" refers to a foundation or post upon which a house or building stands. If the pillars are weak, the entire building becomes weak. Similarly, these five pillars of Islam are the core foundation of a Muslim's faith (Iman) and actions (Amal).

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

"Islam is built upon five pillars."

  • Sahih al-Bukhari : Hadith No. 8
  • Sahih Muslim : Hadith No. 16

1. Faith (Iman)
Meaning: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad (ﷺ) is the Prophet of Allah.
The first condition of being a Muslim is to believe in one Allah and to follow His sent Messenger.

2. Prayer
Meaning: Performing five daily prayers for the sake of Allah. Salah is the most beloved act of worship to Allah.

3. Jakat
Meaning: Giving a fixed portion of one’s wealth for the sake of Allah.

4. Sawm (Fasting)

Refraining from food, drink, and evil deeds from dawn (Subah Sadiq) until sunset during the month of Ramadan.

5. Hajj
Performing Hajj in Makkah once in a lifetime if one has the financial and physical capability. Hajj is a grand gathering of Muslims where everyone presents themselves before Allah.
