Are You Performing Your Wudu Correctly?
Let's check today whether your Wudu is being done correctly.
We perform various acts of Ibadah (worship) after Wudu, so if the Wudu is not correct, no subsequent worship is accepted by Allah.
Salah, Quran recitation, Tawaf (during Hajj/Umrah)—everything depends on performing Wudu correctly.
Now, let's take a look at the steps of Wudu according to the complete Sunnah—
Steps of Wudu
1.বিসমিল্লাহ” বলা
(You can say it silently in your mind, or say "Bismillah" before reciting the specific Dua meant for entering the bathroom. Go take a quick look at the Dua for entering the bathroom if needed). Saying "Bismillah" before starting Wudu is a Sunnah.
2. Washing Both Hands Up to the Wrists
Clean thoroughly between the fingers. (3 times)
3. Rinsing the Mouth / Gargling
Ensure water reaches all parts of the mouth. This means swirling the water inside your mouth. (3 times)
4. Snuffing Water into the Nose (3 Times)
Take water into the nose using the right hand, and expel it using the left hand. (Just like clearing your nose when you have a cold, use your left hand to expel the water from the nose).
5. Washing the Face (3 Times)
Wash the entire face from the hairline on the forehead down to the bottom of the chin, and from one earlobe to the other.
6. Washing Both Arms Including the Elbows
Start with the right arm, then the left arm. Wash from the fingertips up to and including the elbows. (3times)
7. Wiping the Head (Masah) - 1 Time
Wet your hands with fresh water, start from the front of the head (hairline), move them to the back of the head (where the hair ends), and then bring them back to the front where you started. (For women, if bringing the hands back to the front seems difficult, they can do as much as easily possible).
8. Wiping the Ears (1 Time))
Do not re-wet your hands after wiping the head. Using the same wet hands, insert your index fingers into the grooves of your ears and wipe, while using your thumbs to wipe the back of both ears.
9. Washing the Feet (3 Times)
Start with the right foot and wash up to the ankles, ensuring water passes between the toes. Do the same for the left foot.
Very Important: What NOT to Do During Wudu
Perform all the steps one after another in proper sequence (Ttartib). Do not take any breaks during Wudu.
- Do not talk on the phone while performing Wudu.
- Do not check messages.
- Do not get distracted by any other worldly (Dunya) matters.
- Do not clean the sink, fiddle with tissues, or make faces looking at the mirror during Wudu.
Think of Wudu as the key to your Ibadah. If the key isn't right, the door won't open. So give importance to Wudu and perform it beautifully—In sha Allah, all your worship will achieve completion.
Additional Important Note:
Often it happens to us—"How many times did I wash my face? Or my hands? I forgot..." There is no need to worry. Simply move on to the next step.
Because—
✔ Washing each limb once is Fard (obligatory)
✔ Washing 2 or 3 times is Sunnah
✔ You can do it anyway you like—
- Washing the face once
- Washing the arms twice
- Washing the feet three times
- Or even if you wash all limbs just once, your Wudu will be completely valid (Sahih).
- However, washing 3 times (except for wiping the head and ears) is best. Make sure no spot remains dry on the limb you are washing. But washing more than 3 times is forbidden (Makruh/Prohibited).
So do not stress if you lose count—
once is Fard, the rest is Sunnah. If you see that the limb is already wet, you can be sure you have washed it at least once—so move forward to the next step.
