Steps of Wudu:
- Saying "Bismillah" – It is Sunnah (prophetic tradition) to say "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah) before starting Wudu.
- Washing both hands up to the wrists – Cleaning thoroughly between the fingers.
- Rinsing the mouth (Madmadah) – Ensuring water reaches all parts of the mouth.
- Inhaling water into the nose (Istinshaq) – Snuffing water into the nose with the right hand and expelling it with the left hand.
- Washing the face – From the hairline of the forehead to the bottom of the chin, and from ear to ear.
- Washing both arms up to the elbows – Washing the right arm first, then the left arm.
- Wiping the head (Masah - 1 time) – Wetting the hands with fresh water, wiping from the front of the head to the back, and bringing them back to the front.
- Wiping the ears (1 time) – After wiping the head, using the same wet hands to wipe the inside and backside of the ears.
- Washing the feet (3 times) – Starting with the right foot up to the ankles; ensuring water passes between the toes.
3 Duas After Wudu (with Sahih Hadith)
Reciting certain supplications after completing Wudu is a Sunnah that carries immense virtues.
1. The Shahadah
“أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولُهُ”
Ashhadu alla ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh.
Translation: I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and Messenger.
Umar (radiallahu 'anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If anyone performs Wudu beautifully and completely and then recites this supplication, the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he may enter through whichever gate he wishes."
(Hadith No. 234)
2. Another Virtuous Supplication
This supplication is also recited after Wudu:
“اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ”
Allahummaj-'alni minat-tawwabina waj-'alni minal-mutatahhirin.
Translation: O Allah, make me among those who turn to You in repentance and make me among those who purify themselves.
(Sunan an-Nasa'i, Hadith No. 148)
3. Tasbih and Istighfar
“سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ”
Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika,
ashhadu alla ilaha illa Anta,
astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk.
Meaning
Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.
My dear children, perform your Wudu beautifully and correctly. Pay close attention to each step and establish a regular habit of reciting these supplications.
These are not just words, but a beautiful way to build a relationship with Allah. If you perform Wudu properly and recite these Duas, Insha'Allah (if Allah wills), Allah will grant you countless blessings, mercy, and goodness in your life.
