The beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is the final Prophet of Islam. He is the greatest human being and the Prophet sent for all of mankind. Allah, the Glorified and Exalted, has sent him for every person in the entire world.
Allah (SWT) sent Prophets and Messengers at different times to different nations—such as Nuh (AS), Ibrahim (AS), Musa (AS), Isa (AS), and many other Prophets and Messengers. Each of them was sent to specific people and for a specific period of time.
Note: You might be wondering why I am sometimes saying Prophet and sometimes Messenger for Muhammad (ﷺ), right? Let’s learn something new today.
Difference between a Prophet and a Messenger
Who is a Nabi (نبي)?
A Nabi is a person whom Allah sent to the world for the guidance of people, but he was not sent with a new book.
The Prophets generally guide people by following the book of a previous Messenger.
Example:
- Hazrat Harun (AS) was a Prophet, but he was not given a new scripture, so he was not a Messenger.
Who is a Rasul (رسول)?
A Messenger (Rasul) is a person whom Allah sent to the world for the guidance of people, and He gave him a new scripture to call people to the path of Allah.
The duty of the Messengers was to clearly convey Allah’s message to the people.
Example:
- Hazrat Nuh (AS)
- Hazrat Musa (AS)
- Hazrat Isa (AS)
- Muhammad (ﷺ)
Let me briefly explain for you—divine scriptures were not revealed to Prophets, while scriptures were revealed to Messengers. Every Messenger can also be called a Prophet, but a Prophet is not necessarily a Messenger. Therefore, Muhammad (ﷺ) is both a Prophet and a Messenger because the Qur’an was revealed to him.
