Where is Allah?
Allah is above the heavens, above His creation. However, this does not mean He is confined within any physical dimension or limitation.
He is very close to the believers and responds to every call they make.
Allah (SWT) knows all our secrets and desires; nothing is hidden from Him. He is with His creation through His knowledge and power. He is our Creator and Sustainer. Nothing happens except by His will.
Evidence from the Qur’an of Allah’s Highness
The Holy Qur’an describes Allah’s “exaltedness” or “highness” in various ways, such as His being above and beyond all creation, and how everything descends from Him and returns to Him. These indicate His supreme and elevated status above the heavens. For example —
(উচ্চতা):/Highness
In the Holy Qur’an, in the final part of Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 255, Allah says:
“…And He is the Most High, the Most Great.” [2:255]
(Above):(Above):
The Holy Qur’an says,
“He is dominant over His servants, and He is the All-Wise, All-Aware (of everything)…” [6:18]
Meaning: All heads are humbled before Him. The great and powerful rulers of the world are helpless before Him. He is dominant over all things, and all creation is under His command. He is All-Wise and All-Knowing in all His actions and fully aware of everything. Therefore, He knows best who is deserving of His grace and reward and who is not. (Surah Al-An’am 6:18, Tafsir Ahsanul Bayan)
What descends from Him / from Allah.(Things coming down from Him)
In the Holy Qur’an, Allah tells us:
“He regulates all affairs from the heavens to the earth; then everything will ascend to Him in a Day the measure of which is a thousand years of what you count…” [32:5]
Allah also says:
“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an, and indeed, We will be its guardian.” [15:9]
What returns to Him / to Allah.(Things going up to Him)
1.Holy Quran Allah said:
“…To Him ascends good words, and righteous deeds He exalts. But those who plot evil deeds will have a severe punishment, and their plotting will be ruined…” [35:10]
2. “The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years...” [70:4]
“Allah conducts the affairs from the heaven to the earth; then the matters will ascend to Him in a Day whose measure is a thousand years of what you count.” [Surah As-Sajdah 32:5]
Allah is above the heavens. (Allah is above Seven Skies):
The Holy Qur’an says,
“Do you feel secure that He who is in the heaven will not cause the earth to swallow you, and then it would shake violently?” [67:16]
This indicates that Allah is above (in His majesty and authority).
“In an authentic hadith, Mu‘awiyah ibn al-Hakam as-Sulami said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I struck a slave girl very hard. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) expressed that it was a serious wrongdoing. Then I said: O Messenger of Allah, should I not set her free?”
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Bring her to me.’”
“I brought the slave girl to the Prophet (ﷺ), and he asked her: ‘Where is Allah?’”
She said, “In the heaven.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) then asked again, “Who am I?”
She said, “You are the Messenger of Allah.”
Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Free her, for she is a believer.” [Abu Dawood: 3282]
We know Allah’s position from the Hadith.
It is narrated in an authentic hadith that when the beloved Prophet (ﷺ) addressed the largest gathering during the Farewell Hajj sermon, he raised his finger upward and asked all the people:
“Have I not conveyed the message to you?”
they said , yes
“Have I not conveyed the message to you?”
they said , yes
He asked again, “Have I not conveyed the message to you?”
they said , yes
Each time he would say: “O Allah, bear witness!” pointing towards the sky and then towards the people.
Many other hadiths mention that when making du‘a, he (ﷺ) would raise his hands toward the sky. These narrations indicate Allah’s greatness and exaltedness.
Allah (SWT) says in Surah Ghafir, verse 15:
“He is the Possessor of the highest ranks, the Lord of the Throne.”
Meaning: Allah (SWT) is above the Throne, and His Throne is above all of creation.
