
What is Hajj
Hajj is an important worship among the five pillars of Islam. At a specific time, meaning in the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, at the Kaaba Shareef and its surrounding holy places. the worship that is performed according to specific rules is called Hajj.
Through Hajj, Muslims from all over the world wear the same clothes and gather at the House of Allah for the same purpose. From this, lessons of equality, brotherhood, and fear of Allah (Taqwa) are obtained.
The construction of the Ka‘bah and the call to Hajj.
By the command of Allah Ta'ala, Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) and his son Ismail (A.S.) constructed the Kaaba Shareef in Makkah. During the construction of the Kaaba, they prayed to Allah so that this worship would be accepted.
In the Holy Quran, Allah Ta'ala says
“And when Ibrahim and Ismail were raising the foundations of the House, they said, 'Our Lord, accept [this] from us.'"
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:127
After the construction of the Kaaba was completed, Allah Ta'ala commanded Ibrahim (A.S.) to announce the Hajj among mankind.
"And proclaim to the people the Hajj; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass.”
Surah Al-Hajj 2:27
Through this announcement, Hajj commenced, and Allah conveyed that call to the hearts of the people.
When does Hajj become obligatory
Hajj becomes obligatory once in a lifetime upon every such Muslim who possesses the financial capability, physical ability, and a safe route.
In the Holy Quran, Allah Ta'ala says
"And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way."
Surah Ali 'Imran 3:97
Why is Hajj obligatory
- Obeying the direct command of Allah
- Following Ibrahim (A.S.) and Ismail (A.S.)
- Being a means of achieving self-purification and forgiveness of sins
- Completing one's Iman (Faith)
Muhammad (ﷺ) said
"Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit any obscenity or sin, he returns as if he were newly born."
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
The importance of Hajj and warnings
Hajj is such a worship that is obligatory once in a lifetime.However, it should be performed as soon as one becomes capable.The thought of "I will do it in old age" is not correct, because there is no certainty of life.
Whenever you become physically and financially capable, you should perform Hajj immediately.
