
Holy n Surah At-Tawbah, Allah (SWT) says—
“Zakat is only for the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, for freeing slaves, for those in debt, in the way of Allah, and for the traveler.”
— — Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60
Allah has instructed that Zakat be given to the following eight categories of people:
1. The poor (Fuqara)
Those who have almost nothing.
2. miskin
Those who have something, but not enough to meet their basic needs.
3. Zakat administrators (those appointed to collect and distribute Zakat).
Employees of the Zakat institution appointed by the government or society.
4. Those whose hearts are to be reconciled (new Muslims or people whose faith is being strengthened).
New Muslims, or those who are interested in Islam and need encouragement.
5. For freeing slaves (Riqab).
In the past, for freeing slaves; in modern times, it applies to helping free Muslim prisoners/captives.
6. People in debt.
Those who become indebted while trying to meet their daily needs, and are genuinely burdened with lawful debt.
7. In the cause of Allah (Fi Sabilillah)
Those who strive in the way of Allah—such as promoting Islam, Islamic education, da’wah, and training scholars.
8. Ibn al-Sabil (the traveler)
A Muslim who becomes financially helpless while traveling or on a journey.
