What Is Qardan Hasana?
Qardan Hasana refers to giving an interest-free loan sincerely for the sake of Allah, without expecting any extra benefit, profit, or unfair condition in return. It is neither charity nor a business transaction. Rather, it is a beautiful act of helping a fellow Muslim during a time of need.
The purpose of Qardan Hasana is simple:
To seek the pleasure of Allah and to relieve the hardship of another human being.
To seek the pleasure of Allah and to relieve the hardship of another human being.
One of the greatest honors of Qardan Hasana is that Allah describes it as a loan given to Him.
"Who is it that will lend to Allah a benevolent loan, so that He may multiply it for him many times over?" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:245)
In another verse, Allah says:
"If you lend Allah a benevolent loan , He will multiply it for you and forgive you." (Surah At-Taghabun: 17)
Meaning: If you sincerely spend your wealth in ways that please Allah and help His servants, Allah will increase your reward and forgive your sins. When the Qur'an speaks about "lending to Allah," it means helping Allah's creation for His sake.
The Virtues of Qardan Hasana in the Hadith
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said:
"On the night I was taken on the Night Journey (Isra), I saw written on the gate of Paradise: 'Charity is rewarded tenfold, while a loan is rewarded eighteenfold.' I said: 'O Jibril! Why is a loan better than charity?' He said: 'Because a beggar may ask while he possesses wealth, but the one seeking a loan generally does so because of genuine need.'"(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2431 – Hasan)
আরেক হাদিসে এসেছে:
This hadith highlights the special virtue of Qardan Hasana. While both charity and lending are beloved to Allah, a person who seeks a loan is often facing a genuine hardship and wishes to preserve his dignity. For this reason, the reward of Qardan Hasana is described as even greater than ordinary charity.(Sahih Muslim)
Why Is Qardan Hasana So Beneficial?
1. Allah Promises a Multiplied Reward
Allah Himself promises to increase the reward of those who provide a benevolent loan for His sake.
2. A Means of Forgiveness and Blessings
Qardan Hasana softens the heart, helps erase sins, and brings blessings into one's wealth and livelihood.
3. Strengthens Love and Trust Within the Community
When people help one another during difficult times, relationships become stronger, trust grows, and social divisions decrease.
4. A Halal Alternative to Interest-Based Loans
Qardan Hasana helps people avoid riba (interest) and provides a lawful way to meet financial needs.
How to Practice Qardan Hasana
Begin with a Sincere Intention
Make a sincere intention that you are doing this solely for the pleasure of Allah, not for recognition or personal gain.
2. Do Not Charge Interest or Impose Extra Conditions
Any additional financial benefit tied to the loan is prohibited.
3. Lend according to your ability.
Even a small amount can make a significant difference. Allah looks at sincerity, not the size of the amount.
4. Be Flexible with Repayment
If the borrower is struggling financially, giving them more time is a highly rewarding act.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Whoever grants respite to a debtor in hardship, or forgives the debt, Allah will protect him from the hardships of the Day of Judgment." ) (Sahih Muslim)
5. . Consider Forgiving the Debt
If you are able, forgiving the debt can become an act of charity and a source of immense reward from Allah.
Please do this kind of act at least once in your life!
My dear children,
You may not have large amounts of money right now, but you do not need great wealth to begin practicing Qardan Hasana. You can start by:
Here's how you can get started:
- Set aside a little money from your pocket money.
- Lend any friend a book, a notebook, or any necessary items.
- Help someone with their studies or skills.
- Never use harsh language when lending money to someone.
- Remember, Allah Himself will repay this favor.
Always remember:
Helping people never makes a person poorer.
What is given for the sake of Allah is never truly lost.
I hope you grow into individuals who help others stay away from harmful and unlawful alternatives and who earn the pleasure of Allah through kindness and generosity.
A Reminder for Adults
I encourage every adult to make a sincere intention to offer a Qardan Hasana at least once in their lifetime solely for the sake of Allah. Qardan Hasana is much more than a financial transaction. It is a reflection of faith, compassion, mercy, and social responsibility. A person who trusts Allah and stands beside those in need will never be abandoned by Allah. May Allah grant all of us the ability to practice Qardan Hasana, bless our wealth, and make us among those who relieve the hardships of others.
