What is the call of Islam?

In Islam, the word da'wah means to call, to summonIn Islamic terminology, the call to Islam or the religion means,
Calling people to Allah, to His oneness, to following the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and to the beautiful and comprehensive system of life of Islam. Those who do this work are called daʿīs.

In the holy Qur'an, Allah the Exalted says:

Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction.
“Invite people to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction.” Surah An-Nahl: 125

The Importance of Inviting to Islam

In Islam, calling people to the faith is a great trust placed upon the Ummah of Muhammad.

In the Holy Qur’an, Allah tells us:

You are the best nation ever brought forth for humankind, enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil.
“You are the best nation ever to be brought forth for the benefit of humankind; you enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil.” Surah Al-Imran: 110

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Convey my message, even if it is just one verse.
“Deliver even a single verse on my behalf.” Sahih al-Bukhari

This indicates that inviting is the responsibility of every Muslim, according to their knowledge.

Who should be invited?

1. Non-Muslims

Inviting non-Muslims to the fundamental beliefs of Islam—Tawhid (the oneness of God), prophethood, the Hereafter, and the beauty of Islam—is an important part of dawah.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ali (ra.):

“By Allah! If even one person finds guidance through you, it is better for you than a red camel.” Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim

2. Muslims must also be invited.

The invitation isn't just for non-Muslims. Even those who are Muslim—

  • He doesn't pray.
  • Away from the Quran
  • Does not live according to the Sunnah.
  • Engaged in forbidden acts
  • Involved in innovation and superstition

Including inviting them to the right path of Islam with love and wisdom.

In the Holy Qur’an, Allah tells us:

And remind, for the reminder benefits the believers.
“Remind them, for reminding is beneficial to the believers.” Surah Az-Zariyat: 55

How should one invite people to Islam?

1. With wisdom and humility

Not with harshness, but with gentle speech, patience, and compassion.

In the Holy Qur'an, Allah sent Moses (peace be upon him) and Aaron (peace be upon him) to Pharaoh and said:

So speak to him kindly.
“You should speak to him politely.” Surah Taha: 44

2. Through one's own deeds

A da'i's character is his greatest invitation. Honesty, patience, and good character attract people to Islam.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I was sent to perfect good character.” Musnad Ahmad

3. According to knowledge

One should speak only about what one knows for certain. Inviting others with ignorance is harmful.

What's the harm in not inviting people to Islam?

When the call to the faith is stopped, in society-

  • Sins increase
  • Spreading disbelief and error
  • The faith of Muslims is weak.

In the Holy Qur’an, Allah tells us:

Cursed are those who disbelieved… they did not forbid one another from the evil they did.
“They did not forbid each other from evil deeds, and that was the cause of their destruction.” Surah Al-Maidah: 78–79

The call to Islam is not the sole responsibility of any speaker or scholar. Every Muslim man and woman can carry out the call from their own position.

  • Among the family
  • Among friends
  • In society
  • Through online media

Remember, it is essential to reform yourself first, then call others to the path of Allah. May Allah accept us as da'is and grant guidance to people through us. Amen.
