What is the Sunnah?

Sunnah refers to the words, actions, habits, character, and lifestyle of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

How he performed the prayer, how he ate, slept, interacted with people, and made supplications—everything was a lesson for us.

The Sunnah is a path that helps us become more beloved servants of Allah.

Why is the Sunnah so important?

Allah, glorified and exalted, has revealed the Holy Qur'an for us. But to teach us how to put the Qur'an into practice, what Allah wants, and how to worship, Allah sent the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

That is to say, the Qur'an is the word of Allah, and the Prophet ﷺ has given us its practical teachings.

As the Qur'an commands the performance of prayer, we learn from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ how to pray, how many rak'ahs, and what to recite.

The Qur'an mentions zakat, fasting, and Hajj, but the Prophet ﷺ taught us how to perform them.

In the Holy Qur'an, Allah says

“Indeed, the Messenger of Allah is an excellent example for you.”
Surah Al-Ahzab 33:21

In the Holy Qur'an, Allah further says

“Accept what the Messenger gives you, and refrain from what he forbids.”
Surah Al-Hashr 59:7

He also said

“If you love Allah, then follow me, and Allah will love you.”
Say, "O people of the Scripture, do not go beyond the limits in your religion, and do not follow the desires of a people who have gone astray before."

What is the benefit of following the Sunnah?

  • God's love can be found.
  • The deeds are beautiful and complete.
  • Blessings come in life.
  • You can earn rewards even for small deeds.
  • On the Day of Judgment, one can draw close to the Prophet ﷺ.

Remember

The Qur'an and Sunnah together show the complete path of Islam. It's not enough to read the Qur'an alone; you must also learn how the Prophet ﷺ lived according to it.

The more we follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the more we will be able to walk on the right path of Islam, insha'Allah.

May Allah grant us all the ability to live according to the Qur'an and Sunnah. Amen.

1. Saying “Bismillah” before starting work.

It is Sunnah to say “Bismillah” before every good deed—eating, writing, reading, and leaving the house.

Merits:
If you begin in the name of Allah, your work is blessed and Satan stays away.

📖 Hadith:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Any work that is started without ‘Bismillah’ is deprived of blessing.”
(The meaning of the Sahih Hadith, al-Hakim; al-Albani said it is Sahih)

2. Getting off to a good start on the right track

Begin every good deed—putting on clothes, putting on shoes, and starting ablution—on the right side.

📖 Hadith:

“The Prophet ﷺ preferred to begin with the right side for purification and honorable deeds.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

3. Wash your hands before and after eating.

Health and Sunnah are important from both perspectives.

📖 Hadith:

“There is a blessing in washing your hands before and after eating.”
(Tirmidhi; Hasan Hadith)

4. Eating and drinking with the right hand

Hadith:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Eat with your right hand and drink with your right hand, for Satan eats and drinks with his left hand.”
(Sahih Muslim)

5. Don't blame the food

If you don't like the food, it is sunnah to remain silent.

📖 Hadith:

“The Prophet ﷺ never complained about food; if he liked it, he ate it, and if he didn't, he left it.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

6. Greeting upon meeting

Greeting everyone, whether familiar or unfamiliar, is a Sunnah.

📖 Hadith:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Greet one another with peace.”
(Sahih Muslim)

7. Speak with a smile

Not scorn or harshness, but gentle treatment is the Sunnah.

📖 Hadith:

“Smiling at your brother is also charity.”
(Tirmidhi; Sahih)

8. Saying “Alhamdulillah” when sneezing

And when someone says “Yarhamukallah,” you say it back.

📖 Hadith:

“Allah loves sneezing… when someone sneezes and says ‘Alhamdulillah,’ it is the right of that Muslim that other Muslims pray for them.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari

9. Performing ablution before sleeping

It is also considered a good intention for the night prayer.

📖 Hadith:

“When you go to bed, perform ablution as you would for prayer.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

10. Make plenty of Istighfar

It is Sunnah to seek forgiveness at least 100 times a day.

📖 Hadith:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“I ask Allah for forgiveness more than a hundred times every day.”
(Sahih Muslim)

These sunnahs are very easy, but their reward is very great. If practiced regularly—

  • Faith is strengthened.
  • Character is beautiful.
  • Daily life becomes worship.
  • Love the Prophet.
Do not neglect the minor Sunnah, for it is these that open the door to great rewards. Perform the Sunnah with the proper intention.
