Among these, one important act is maintaining family ties, which in Arabic is called silaturrahim.

Allah, glorified and exalted, has clearly instructed in the Holy Qur'an that severing ties of kinship is strictly forbidden, and that maintaining those ties is one of the greatest means of attaining His pleasure.

Allah says-

“Those who believe in Allah are told to maintain ties with their relatives.”
(Surah An-Nisa, 4:36)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever maintains ties with his relatives, Allah prolongs his life and increases his sustenance.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

In Islam, treating one's relatives kindly is not merely good behavior; it is an act of worship, a deed that earns reward, and an easy path to reaching Paradise.

Checking on loved ones, standing by them in their times of need, calling, visiting, helping—
All of these are deeds of great value in the sight of Allah.

My dear children,
Islam doesn't just teach us about prayer and fasting; it also teaches us to treat people well and to honor our relatives. And for that, we receive rewards in this world and the Hereafter. So you must always maintain good relationships with your relatives. How will you do that?

Remember,

1. Check in regularly.

Parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins—all relatives—whenever you have time, call them, message them, or check in on them.,
“”How are you all doing? Is a two-minute call or a 30-second message really such a big deal? Of course not."

2. Send greetings on Eid and special days.

Even a short message can express a lot of love. It strengthens the relationship. Don't forget to do this on special occasions.

3. Help someone in need.

Offering comfort when someone mentions their expenses, providing even a little assistance—these are deeds that Allah greatly loves. Help a poor relative.

6. Forgive if there is a fight or misunderstanding.

Do not sever ties with any relative. Do not harbor resentment in your heart. Islam teaches,
Whoever forgives, Allah grants them a high rank. So no matter how much they harm you or how many mistakes they make, forgive them for the sake of Allah's pleasure.

7. If there's an opportunity to meet, you will go.

Even spending a little time makes relatives very happy. It strengthens the relationship. You should meet up, even if only for a short while.

8. Don't forget to give a gift

Even a small gift—a chocolate, a card… or a cotton sari or lungi, or any other present—will do. These fill the heart with love. So you can give little gifts.

9. Maintain relationships for the sake of Allah's pleasure.

Remember, treating your relatives well is not just courtesy; it is worship. It is an act of merit. Do it for the sake of Allah's pleasure. But who will benefit? You—Allahu Akbar.

Tip: Because you haven't been in regular contact with many relatives, a gap has formed. You might feel awkward reaching out to them. In that case, follow your mom's tips.

If you don't know their names or phone numbers, ask your close relatives—like cousins, uncles and aunts, or maternal and paternal uncles and aunts—whom you're in touch with.

If you get their phone number, you can start by sending a message, because calling them directly after a long time can be awkward.

In the message, mention who you are (for example, say you're so-and-so's daughter or son) and see what they reply.
