Istighfar The meaning of the word is to ask Allah for forgiveness. That is, to acknowledge one's sins and, with a repentant heart, say to Allah:
“O Allah, forgive me.”
Istighfar is not just for major sins; Rather, it should be made for all sins, known and unknown, small and large. Even the righteous servants used to make istighfar regularly. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to make istighfar 70—or according to some, 100—times a day. He was beloved by Allah and had the highest place in Paradise reserved for him. Yet he still made istighfar regularly.
When should one seek forgiveness?
There is no specific time for making Istighfar., One can seek forgiveness at any time.You can recite the Istighfar whenever you walk, move, stand up, or sit down.
However, some times are especially blessed:
- After the prayer
- (Late night)
- If any sin is committed, immediately
- In times of danger, worry, or distress
- Before sleeping
- After Fajr and Maghrib
In the Holy Qur'an, Allah Ta'ala says: “They ask for forgiveness late at night.” (Surah Az-Zariyat: 18)
The Benefits and Merits of Istighfar
1. Sins are forgiven
The greatest benefit of istighfar is that Allah forgives sins.
“O My servants who have wronged yourselves, do not despair of Allah's mercy. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.” (Surah Az-Zumar: 53)
2. Rizq increases and hardship is removed.
Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) said to his people:
“Ask forgiveness from your Lord; He is exceedingly forgiving. He will send abundant rain upon you from the sky and increase your wealth and children.” (Surah Nuh: 10–12)
3. Peace comes from within
Istighfar lightens the heart and reduces worry and restlessness.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said:
“Whoever clings to Istighfar, Allah will make a way for them out of every difficulty.” (Abu Dawud)
4. Gaining the nearness of Allah
Whoever asks for forgiveness more and more becomes dear to Allah.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said:
“I ask Allah for forgiveness more than a hundred times every day.” (Sahih Muslim)
Du'a is accepted. – Du'a is accepted when one makes istighfar frequently.
How can one make istighfar regularly?
1. Set a specific number daily. (but not limited to)
For example, at least 100 istighfar every day.
2. In your spare time, keep making istighfar.
While walking, while cooking, in the car—you can recite the istighfar aloud.
3. Use a tasbih or your fingers.
It makes it easier to maintain focus.
৪. Do not delay after sinning.
If you make a mistake, say Istighfar immediately.
Some easy and virtuous istighfar
1. The easiest
I ask Allah for forgiveness.
Pronunciation: I seek refuge in Allah
Meaning: I ask Allah for forgiveness.
2. More virtuous
I ask Allah for forgiveness and I repent to Him.
Meaning: I ask Allah for forgiveness and repent to Him.
৩.Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught a highly virtuous supplication for forgiveness.
He said, “The person who will say"
I ask forgiveness from Allah, the One besides whom there is no deity, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining, and I repent to Him.
I ask forgiveness from Allah, the One besides whom there is no deity, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining, and I repent to Him.
I ask for forgiveness from Allah, who has no true deity besides Him, who is the Ever-Living and Sustainer of all creation. And to Him I turn in repentance.
Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Even if he is a deserter from the battlefield, he will be forgiven.”

৪. The best of supplications
O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god but You.
I am created and I am your servant.
O Lord, I have not been able to fulfill Your covenant and Your promise.
I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done.
I have no need for your favors.
Oh, you who have committed wrongdoing.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said: “Whoever recites this prayer with faith, day or night, and dies, will enter Paradise. — Sahih al-Bukhari
Istighfar is not just an act of the tongue—it is repentance of the heart, a turning back to Allah. The more we seek forgiveness, the easier our life becomes, the calmer our inner self becomes, and the more beautiful the Hereafter becomes.
